….Yep. It is a pretty common occurrence in the diving/snorkeling industry but there’s a few things to bear in mind:-
- It’s not the natural food for fish. It can mess with their digestive system.
- If they are being fed, they are not performing their role in the food chain. For example, in Asia, most of the fish that flock to be fed are damselfish species, many are supposed to graze algae off the reef. Without a control on algal growth, algae can smother the coral.
- Association of people with food can be dangerous with some species, like sharks, moray eels etc. Here is a (slightly extreme) example: Fool feeds moray eel and gets thumb bitten off.
Feeding wildlife can have knock-on effects on their ecosystem. They don’t need our help to find food. It doesn’t do anyone any favours! But it’s all about spreading the word. So tell your friends :)
