@Anon, it depends what you consider paying well. As Sam said, consultancy and research can be lucrative for the right people. They can also be literally the exact opposite of that too if you don't play it right. Do it for genuine love and money will often follow you.

There tends to be a social pressure in marine biology -type fields to not ask each other about the money. Mostly because if that’s your aim, you’re in the wrong field, and if you do manage it, we’re all jealous, but also wondering who you sold your soul to.
I couldn’t be happy behind a desk all the time, even if it paid well. So I chose job satisfaction over well paid boredom. Saying that, it’s not like you should get used and abused just because the job is cool. You deserve to be paid for the skills you are bringing to the table. It’s just all relative that’s all.
